What should I do if I suspect I am being scammed by a lender?
If you suspect loan fraud, take these steps immediately: stop all payments and communication with the suspected scammer; document everything — save all emails, texts, contracts, and receipts; contact your bank to stop any wire transfers if possible; file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) at consumerfinance.gov, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at reportfraud.ftc.gov, and your state attorney general's office; report to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3.gov) if it involved online fraud; and consult a consumer protection attorney, especially if you have already lost money. Acting quickly improves the chances of recovery and helps authorities stop the scammer from targeting others.
